Full home renovation · Grand Cayman
A full renovation blending timeless elegance with a transitional, bespoke aesthetic, luxurious, cool, and quietly masculine.
This full home renovation was guided by a clear brief from the outset: something transitional, bespoke, and confidently different from the light, breezy coastal style so common in Cayman residential design. The client wanted architectural moldings, steel-framed glass, and a neutral palette pushed toward something darker, richer, and more considered, luxurious, but cool. Refined, but with an edge.
KEMPA Design led the project end to end: kitchen, entry, living areas, staircase, primary suite, and second-floor office and guest rooms, treating every room as part of one cohesive design language rather than a series of separate renovations. Dark wood tones, black steel detailing, and a carefully layered lighting plan run consistently through the home, tying the ground floor’s public rooms to the private spaces above.
The kitchen sits at the heart of the project, reconfigured to discreetly integrate the pantry within the cabinetry, anchored by a black wood-look island and a custom range hood as the room’s defining feature.

“The brief asked for something luxurious but cool, a slightly masculine edge. Not the typical coastal look. We leaned into dark tones, steel, and architectural detail to give the home real presence.”
01
Living & dining
To enhance the home’s entertaining potential, an existing closet off the dining room was reimagined as a dedicated wine display, glass-fronted, back-lit, and designed to harmonise directly with the kitchen’s dark cabinetry and stone surfaces. It’s a small-footprint addition with an outsized visual impact, positioned exactly where guests will see it.
A coffered dark-wood ceiling defines the dining zone, distinguishing it from the open living space beyond while keeping the two rooms visually connected. A cluster of glass globe pendants over the table adds a softer, more sculptural counterpoint to the room’s straighter architectural lines.
The living room received a complete furniture fit-out reflecting the home’s transitional aesthetic, a deep charcoal sectional, a pair of polished-frame accent chairs, and a substantial crystal-drop chandelier suspended from the vaulted ceiling. Dark panelled walls run the full height of the room, broken by a large arched mirror and two symmetrical gallery groupings.
A built-in window seat tucks into the far corner, upholstered to match the room’s palette, a quiet reading nook that softens what is otherwise a fairly architectural, formal space.
02
The kitchen
Black, wood-look cabinetry, a book-matched stone backsplash, and a custom range hood built as the room’s defining feature.
The client’s brief called for a black, wood-look kitchen, a departure from the pale, coastal kitchens typical of the market. The layout was reconfigured to discreetly integrate the pantry within the cabinetry, keeping the room’s lines clean while adding genuine storage capacity behind the scenes.
A book-matched marble backsplash rises the full height of the wall behind the range, with a floating stone shelf and integrated lighting creating a considered display moment for everyday objects. The custom range hood, designed with a damper to address existing ventilation issues, was treated as a defining architectural feature rather than a purely functional element. Most existing appliances remain in place, with the refrigerator transformed into a panel-ready design to disappear seamlessly into the cabinetry run.
03
Entry & architectural detail
The entry was refined to create a strong, welcoming arrival sequence, the existing mix of millwork was simplified into a single dark, full-height feature wall with integrated brass light strips, fronted by a floating marble console. A pair of upholstered stools tuck beneath, and a bench seat at the opposite wall gives the space genuine function as a transition point between outside and in.
Elsewhere in the home, recently sourced interior windows from the UK, steel-framed with black mullions, were installed on the second floor overlooking the living area below, introducing a striking architectural detail while preserving the visual flow between floors.
The existing staircase was capped with black treads and the landing finished in a slat-wall design, adding texture and continuing the home’s masculine architectural language up through the second floor.
