Post: What is my home decor style?

Not sure what your home decor style is? Kempa Design breaks down the main styles and simple ways to find the one that fits you.

Table of Contents

Most people can walk into a room and know instantly whether they love it, even if they cannot explain why. That instinct is your home decor style talking.ย

Putting a name to it, and understanding what actually makes up that style, is what turns a collection of things you like into a home that feels cohesive from room to room.

Why knowing your style actually matters

Without a clear sense of your style, it is easy to end up with a home full of pieces you individually like but that do not work together as a whole. A sofa from one aesthetic paired with art from another and lighting from a third rarely reads as intentional, even if every piece is beautiful on its own.

Once you understand your style, every decision gets easier. Shopping becomes faster because you know what to look for, and rooms start to feel finished because everything is pulling in the same direction rather than fighting each other for attention.

The main home decor styles to know

There are dozens of home design styles out there, but most fall into a handful of broad families.ย

Modern and contemporary styles favor clean lines and a restrained palette. Coastal style leans on light, natural materials and breezy neutrals. Traditional style embraces symmetry, rich textiles, and classic furniture silhouettes. Minimalist style strips a room back to only what is essential. Eclectic style intentionally mixes eras and patterns rather than sticking to one look.

Very few homes are purely one interior design style. Most people land somewhere between two or three of these, and that blend is exactly what makes a home feel personal rather than like a showroom display.

Simple ways to find your style

You likely already have more clues than you realize. Open your closet and notice the colors, textures, and silhouettes you gravitate toward without even thinking about it. The same instincts that guide your wardrobe usually carry over into how you want your home to feel.

Save images of rooms that genuinely excite you, whether from a magazine, a hotel you have stayed in, or a friend’s home, and look for what repeats. Is it a color palette? A type of material? A certain level of clutter or openness?

A quick home decor style self check

If you want a faster read on your style, ask yourself a few honest questions. Do you feel calmer in a room with very little in it, or does an empty corner make you want to fill it with something meaningful?ย

Do you gravitate toward natural materials like wood and linen, or do you prefer sleek, polished surfaces? Would you rather mix pieces collected over years, or buy a coordinated set all at once?

There is no wrong answer to any of these. A decor style quiz can be a fun starting point, but your honest answers to questions like these usually reveal more than a quiz built for general audiences ever could, since they are based on how you actually live rather than a generic set of options.

Turning your style into a finished home

Knowing your style is the easy part. Translating it into a home that actually functions well is where a lot of people get stuck.

A room can nail the aesthetic and still feel wrong if the layout does not support how you live day to day, or if the furniture and finishes were chosen for looks alone rather than durability and comfort.

This is where working with an interior designer tends to pay off. Rather than replacing your instincts, a good designer refines them, helping you apply your style consistently across every room while keeping the space genuinely livable.

How Kempa Design works with your style

Every project we take on starts with understanding how you actually want to live, not just which images you have saved. From there, our approach translates that personal style into a cohesive plan for your whole home, rather than a single well styled room that feels disconnected from the rest. You can see the range of styles we have brought to life across our recent projects.

If you know your style but are not sure how to bring it to life, or you are still narrowing it down, we would love to help you figure it out together.
